Oxidative Stress oxidative-stress/ Thu, 14 Feb 2019 05:11:30 +0000 ?p=554 Oxidative Stress Read More »

]]>
Oxidative stress is an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants in our body, where the free radicals are presently more than antioxidants. Oxidation is an important process in our body. It happens when our body metabolizes oxygen to produce energy. This process also produces free radicals.

Free radicals are necessary to some extent as they help in the elimination of pathogens causing infection and other health problems. However, when there are more free radicals present than antioxidants, they can start causing damage to fatty tissue, DNA and proteins in our body. Over a long period of time, this can lead to diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, neurodegenerative disease (such as Parkinson and Alzheimer’s disease), cancer, premature aging and so on.

Sources of Free Radicals:

  • Everybody produces some free radicals naturally in the body, which is normal.
  • From the environment: radiation (including UV, x-rays, mobile phones), cigarette smoke, pollution, pesticides and other chemicals.
  • Diet: high in sugar, fat, alcohol. These lead to inflamed liver and gut.
  • Lack of sleep. Sleep deprivation increases oxidation.
  • Excessive stress. Stress releases cortisol hormone which trigger inflammation.
  • Excessive exercise.
  • Chronic infection, such as dental infection.

How to Minimise Oxidative Stress:

  • Get enough sleep and exercise regularly
  • Do not smoke
  • Decrease alcohol intake, avoid sugar and processed food
  • Avoid chemicals exposure, such as pesticides used on food
  • Use sunscreen
  • Reduce stress. Allow time for daily stress remedies: go for a walk, meditation, talk to a friend, watch a funny show, etc.
  • Include enough antioxidants in our diet: berries, cherries, citrus, prunes, dark leafy green, broccoli, carrots, tomatoes, olives, fish, nuts, turmeric, ginger, green tea, onion, garlic and cinnamon.

As mentioned before, oxidative stress leads to premature aging including skin aging. So when treating aging skin, make sure you combine diet, lifestyle, advanced treatments and skincare. It is very important to look after your skin from the inside-out.

Step by Step Skincare Routine step-by-step-skincare-routine/ Mon, 07 Jan 2019 05:43:52 +0000 ?p=546 Step by Step Skincare Routine Read More »

]]>
There are millions of skincare on the market nowadays and we probably have purchased a lot of them, including cleanser, day cream, night cream, and so on. Many of us may have asked which one is to be put first, sunscreen or moisturizer, or serum. So here is our recommendation on skincare routine:

Morning routine:

  1. Cleanser: use a gentle cleanser to cleanse the face and neck.
  2. Toner or spray: apply it after cleansing to correct skin pH and prepare the skin for its treatment products.
  3. Treatment serum/cream: apply day cream/serum all over the face and neck.
  4. Eye cream: apply a small amount of eye cream around the orbital bone only.
  5. Moisturiser: apply moisturizer suitable for your skin type over the face and neck.
  6. Sunscreen minimum SPF 30+: sunscreen is the most important skincare. The majority of premature aging and skin problems is caused by sun exposure, so make sure you put your sunscreen on every day and reapply it as necessary.
  7. Makeup: lastly put your makeup if you are wearing.

Note: If your makeup or moisturizer contains SPF you may skip step 6, providing it has a minimum of SPF 30.

Evening routine:

  1. Cleanser: cleanse eye and lip makeup with makeup cleanser, then use a gentle cleanser all over the face and neck. Double cleansing is recommended to ensure all dirt and impurities are removed. If using a treatment cleanser like glycolic or lactic acid cleanser, do it after the double cleansing with a gentle cleanser.
  2. Exfoliant: exfoliate your clean skin once or twice a week. Exfoliation will ensure the removal of dead skin cells from the surface layer of our skin.
  3. Mask: mask will hydrate and gives extra protection to our skin from any potential environmental harsh. Do it once a week.
  4. Toner or spray: apply it on clean skin to correct pH and prepare the skin for its treatment products.
  5. Treatment serum/cream: apply a night cream/serum all over the face and neck. Follow the instruction from the manufacturer or your skin specialists. Some treatment serum like Retinol (Vitamin A) may be put every other evening for the first few weeks.
  6. Eye cream: apply a small amount of eye cream around the orbital bone only.
  7. Moisturiser: apply moisturizer suitable for your skin type over the face and neck.

You may not use all the mentioned products, but it is very important to know the step of applying your skincare. It is recommended to wait for about five 5 minutes between applications to give enough time for a product to be absorbed. For example, if you only use cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen; cleanse your face first, followed by moisturizer, leave it for 5 minutes then apply sunscreen in the daytime.

To correct a skin concern, you need a treatment cream or serum. Our favorite active ingredients to treat aging signs are Vitamin C for the day and Retinol for the night. For acne, products with glycolic and salicylic acid are among our favorites. Talk to a skin experts to find out the best cosmeceuticals products suitable for your skin.

Have a good skin with a good skincare routine…

Summer Means Sunscreen summer-means-sunscreen/ Mon, 31 Dec 2018 03:00:21 +0000 ?p=540 Summer Means Sunscreen Read More »

“I don’t go out in the sun” is a popular excuse when we are asked why we don’t use sunscreen regularly. We often think that sunscreen is unnecessary unless we go to the beach or do some outdoor activities. Even though we work or stay indoor most of the time, we still get sun’s UV (ultra-violet) rays when we drive or walk from a parking area to a building. A small period of sun exposure daily means long-term UV exposure and leads to sun-damaged skin.

Visible skin changes as a result of chronic UV exposure include wrinkles and fine lines, loss of tone and elasticity, hyperpigmentation or dark spots, skin lesions and skin cancers. In fact, studies reveal that sun’s UV rays responsible for 90% of premature skin aging cases.

There are three different types of UVs: UVA, UVB, and UVC. UVA penetrates the deeper layers of the skin, can penetrate glass and is related to the development of malignant melanoma. UVB is responsible for sunburn and tanning, linked to actinic keratosis, squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), basal cell carcinoma (BCC), and melanoma. UVC doesn’t cause harm to our skin yet, as it is mostly absorbed in the ozone layer. However, the UVC might become future concerns due to the depletion of the ozone layer.

Sunscreens contain active ingredients that either absorb, reflect or scatter the UVs and prevent it from damaging our skin. Sunscreen is the most important skincare. In Australia, skin cancer rate is one of the highest in the world, therefore sunscreen of SPF 50+ is recommended as it provides better protection from skin damage.

In summer, sunscreen is a must. It has to be applied regularly and generously. In winter, when we are dressed in jackets, pants and boots, we still have to protect our face, neck, hands with sunscreen as the UV is still there.

We recommend to use a broad-screen sunscreen (against UVA and UVB) with a minimum of SPF 30+, or SPF 50+ in summer or if you are suffered from hyperpigmentation. It is best to apply sunscreen 15 minutes before sun exposure. As a morning routine, cleanse your skin then apply moisturizer, leave it for 5 minutes, then apply sunscreen and lastly your makeup. You may skip the sunscreen application if your moisturizer or foundation contains SPF, as long as they are SPF 30+.

How much sunscreen should we use and how to often should we apply it? Always apply a generous amount of sunscreen, covering all parts of body that will get sun exposure. As a guide, use the teaspoon rules. Apply more than half a teaspoon each on: face and neck, right arm, left arm. Apply more than a teaspoon each on front body/core, back, right leg, left leg. Re-apply it every 2 hours or as necessary. Remember that those amounts have to be adjusted when used for children or wider parts of the skin.

For a maximum sun protection, use wide-bream hat, sunglasses and protective clothes as well. It is also important to note that following a skin treatment it is best to avoid direct sun exposure for a few days after the procedure.

Do you heard about vitamin for healthy skin

it is true. here we describe more information  for you:

Vitamin D

Even though you should limit your skin’s exposure to the sun, a daily 10 to 15-minute exposure helps your body to produce this important vitamin. When your skin is in contact with the sun, cholesterol is converted to vitamin D. After this process, your liver and kidneys take in the vitamin in and circulate it through your body to aid in the development of new healthy cells, skin cells included. Vitamin D is important to improve your skin tone and can help the treatment of psoriasis.

To increase your vitamin D intake you should:

Vitamin C is vital for the body to synthesize collagen which helps to fight anti-aging signs on your skin. If taken orally, it improves the effectiveness of the sunscreen that is applied to your skin. This happens because this vitamin decreases cell damage and helps wounds in your skin to heal. If enough vitamin C is taken, it can further repair and prevent dry skin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress, which can help protect against premature aging and wrinkles as well as improve the appearance of scars and imperfections. The vitamin is found in many skin care products on the market.

Vitamin K

Vitamin K is essential in aiding the body’s process of blood clotting, which helps the body heal wounds, bruises, and areas affected by surgery. The basic functions of vitamin K are also thought to help certain skin conditions

The best way to consume amla is to blend it in a juice and drink it on an empty stomach, preferably early in the morning.

Apple: It has plenty of vitamin C to keep your skin firm and radiant. Free-radical damage can cause premature skin aging and apples prevent the damage from happening. Having one apple a day will ensure you have amazing looking skin. An alternative option is to make juice with the apple and apply it directly to your face and leaving it on for 10 minutes before washing it off with water.

Beetroot: This vegetable is a rich source of anthocyanins, which is a great antioxidant for the prevention of wrinkle appearance. The more antioxidants you consume, the healthier your skin will look. The best way to eat beetroot is to boil it first, as it can be hard to digest it in its raw version. Adding some lemon juice when eating this vegetable, can improve the taste and improve the health benefits of the meal.

Carrot: Beta carotene is converted by the body into vitamin A and carrots are full of beta carotene. They will improve the look of your skin and help the wrinkles stay off your beautiful face. A great way to consume this vegetable is by drinking it as a juice and keeping the fibers intact. You can also add cooked carrots into your favorite dishes or add raw carrots to your salad.

Lemon: Lemons keep acne, scars, and blackheads away from your face. It also has a high amount of vitamin C, which is needed for the body to synthesize collagen. Pumpkin seeds: Having these seeds are a great option if you are looking to brighten up your complexion. They have a lot of zinc, which is essential for your body to create new skin cells. They will also control oil on your skin and improve skin tone. To get the full benefits from pumpkin seeds, have a handful of them as an evening snack. Another way of having these seeds is to add them to sandwiches or to curries as garnish.

Spinach: Spinach has anti-inflammatory properties that will eliminate toxins to give you better-looking skin. It can help reduce wrinkles because it is full of antioxidants. A great way to eat spinach is to add it to your salads or to juice.

Strawberry: It has an abundance of antioxidants and malic acid, which acts as a natural whitening agent. You can have strawberries on its own, add it to yogurt, or blend it to make a delicious smoothie. Another way of using strawberries to improve the look on your skin is to apply it directly to your face.

Sweet potato: Sweet potato has vitamins A and C, which will keep acne away from your skin, heal the scars from previous acne and improve skin tone. It also has anti-inflammatory properties to help eliminate those unwanted toxins. You can boil sweet potato and add it to your evening meals. You can also leave the skin on to improve the benefits of the foods.

Tomato: It is another food that is filled with antioxidants to help improve the glow on your skin. The most important antioxidant in the tomato for your skin is lycopene because it had anti-aging properties. Lycopene also acts as a sunscreen that comes from the inside of your body. The acidity in the tomato tightens pores and prevents future pimples. Tomatoes can eaten raw or you can also use the pulp and the juice directly on your skin.
